Hello Friends!
I finished 2 Chronicles this week. Yikes, those accounts are hard to read. You know what stood out to me the most? The kings about whom the scripture said they did what was right, but at the end of their lives, they and their actions were unrecognizable as kings called by God. Consider just these few:
- Uzziah got prideful and finished his reign as a leper.
- Amaziah returned to idols at the end of his life.
- Joash started so well, yet when the godly influence in his life died, he ended his reign sanctioning the murder of a prophet.
- Asa - another who started so well but left this life afflicted and distant from God.
- And who could forget Solomon?
This isn't a full treatise of the kings and their highs and lows; just my own ponderings as I finish Chronicles.
The sentiment I'm sitting with is the idea and desire to finish well. I want to love Jesus all the way home. Consider these kings — they were human, just like me and you. I truly believe they started with the best of intentions and the zeal of youthfulness. But somewhere, it seems they forgot Moses' prayer in Psalm 90:12, "Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom." I don't really like numbering my days. It's fun to live with few cares about how many years I might have left. Yet, I have a renewed sense of urgency and understanding that I don't get to coast as the years in my rearview are likely greater than the years in front of me. Goodness, I want to finish well. How about you?
Let's pray Psalm 90:12 for one another and ask God to soften our hearts that we may truly live out the gift of the days purchased for us by the Savior so worthy of our allegiance - all the way home!
